Dave Wilkinson's Posterous http://thinkdave.posterous.com WordPress, Thesis & Miscellaneous chatter from the Interwebs posterous.com Wed, 25 Nov 2009 03:56:51 -0800 Blogs I like - Geeks are In http://thinkdave.posterous.com/blogs-i-like-geeks-are-in http://thinkdave.posterous.com/blogs-i-like-geeks-are-in

If I were a more talented designer, the Geeks are In blog would be the type of blog I’d design. I like the slightly grungy look. I love the graphical elements scattered about the place. And the pac-man references in the footer make me smile. Good effort on the design.

The content is not unique though. In fact, this is more of an archive of other people’s stuff than a blog containing original content. It was created because Twitter’s 140 characters just weren’t searchable enough (yet).

Mon, 23 Nov 2009 02:05:33 -0800 Blogs I like - Billy Tamplin http://thinkdave.posterous.com/blogs-i-like-billy-tamplin http://thinkdave.posterous.com/blogs-i-like-billy-tamplin I had this really great idea a few weeks ago. Find great looking blog designs and post them here as (a) a showcase of stuff I think is really good and (b) inspiration for my own work. Then we had a baby and nothing has happened for 4 weeks, which leads me to conclude that I'm just as useless at microblogging as I am at normal blogging.

Anyway, here's a look at Billy Tamplin's new blog. It's awesome for 2 reasons:

1. The design is lovely. Clean, calming, somewhat playful.
2. The blog posts take the form of achievement milestones. Every time Billy achieves something noteworthy, he blogs it and awards himself an achievement badge. Nice!

My favourite WordPress-driven site of all time is without doubt icondock.com.

Not only is the site beautiful to look at but it also uses the WP e-commerce plugin perfectly, creating a clean, easy to use online store/blog/static website. If you're interested in social commerce this is the site you need to use as a reference.

I've been searching for beautiful blog designs and came across Gaby Castellanos' blog on CSSMania. The attention to detail on this site is really something, especially on the sidebar and footer. Don't rely on the screenshot; visit the site: http://www.gabycastellanos.com.

On August 27th, Stumbleupon kindly sent a ton of traffic to thinkdave.com, all to read my award-winning (not really) WordPress as a CMS post. Sadly, none of those visitors hired me to build them a WordPress theme...

Even more sadly traffic has completely returned to normal now, making my Google Analytics graph look somewhat sad.

Fri, 10 Jul 2009 07:07:19 -0700 My first free WordPress theme http://thinkdave.posterous.com/my-first-free-wordpress-theme http://thinkdave.posterous.com/my-first-free-wordpress-theme This is a features list for a new blog theme I'm designing for public
release. I'm writing it here so I remember to include all the features. For this project I'm returning to the idea that WordPress is all about
the blogging. While I believe it is an excellent CMS, this particular
theme design is a blog, not a content management system.

Where possible I'm using built-in WordPress functionality. In the
interest of saving time and money when I roll this out to a paying
client, I'm also going to use a bunch of stable plugins to achieve
certain effects.

I'm going to be using the Hybrid framework for these designs because it
is a very versatile blog framework (I don't think it is suitable for CMS
theming). It also has a very helpful support forum and a developer who
actually responds!

Features:

1. Control the pages displayed in the main navigation system of the
blog, editable via the dashboard.
2. Control the order of pages displayed in the main navigation system.
2. Allow multiple instances of widgets in sidebars AND footers.
3. Allow snippets of code to be added via a widget to strategic points
around the container.
4. Allow dashboard insertion of a Feedburner URL and Google Analytics
ID.
5. Display excerpts and thumbnails in posts and pages, creating archive
pages.
6. Modify meta tags on a post/page.
7. Use the WordPress 2.8 threaded comments functionality.
8. Display a Twitter stream.
9. Use a tabbed navigation system in sidebars.
10. Display and control banner ads in sidebars.
11. Include an XML sitemap.
12. Build a customizable XHTML sitemap.

Thu, 09 Jul 2009 06:21:31 -0700 It's no wonder my mother isn't proud of me http://thinkdave.posterous.com/its-no-wonder-my-mother-isnt-proud-of-me http://thinkdave.posterous.com/its-no-wonder-my-mother-isnt-proud-of-me

Today I’ve spent 3 hours writing terrible articles about wooden bunk beds. Yesterday I spent literally the whole day restarting computers in the office and swearing at call centre agents. This evening when I get home I’ll be wrestling with the intricacies of Wii Bass fishing.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t what my mother had in mind when she forked out all that money on a private school education…

Wed, 08 Jul 2009 00:38:12 -0700 Oh my God I think I'm becoming a trainspotter! http://thinkdave.posterous.com/oh-my-god-i-think-im-becoming-a-trainspotter http://thinkdave.posterous.com/oh-my-god-i-think-im-becoming-a-trainspotter I've been to the National Railway Museum in York 3 times in the past
year (and enjoyed each trip). I don't mind waiting for trains to cross
level crossings (if I'm at the front of the queue it's like winning a
prize). I always offer to fetch a granny/aunt/uncle from some obscure
town in Scotland as long as I can take the train, and I'm bitterly
disappointed that my nearest Toys 'R Us doesn't have a model railway
section.

All I need is an anorak and I'll be converted...

Tue, 07 Jul 2009 14:56:59 -0700 Thesis for WordPress is like the game of rugby http://thinkdave.posterous.com/thesis-for-wordpress-is-like-the-game-of-rugb http://thinkdave.posterous.com/thesis-for-wordpress-is-like-the-game-of-rugb Because just like rugby, Thesis has to go backwards before it can go forwards. Before you go anywhere you spend an hour removing styles, then another hour removing functions. Once you've successfully 'passed the ball backwards', you can begin to run forwards by adding new styles and functions. Daft, but popular nonetheless.
